Just a 2 hour drive from Kota Kinabalu, will
bring you to the base and National Park World
Heritage Site of the highest mountain in
Southeast Asia. Despite towering 13,455ft
high, the summit of Mount Kinabalu is
perfectly accessible by any reasonably fit
person of any age.
From the base and National Park HQ at
5,000ft, visitors can view the various changes
in landscape and vegetation from dipterocarp
forest up through heath forest to the bare
glacial carved igneous rock faces at the
summit. A path will lead you with your guide
to the top for awe inspiring magnificent views
over Borneo. The record up and down by foot
stands at a little over 21/2 hours! Most people
however can comfortably handle the walk in
half a day (each way), with a night stop at
10,000ft at Camp Laban Rata.
Mountain ascents are suitable for all ages providing you are generally fit.
There is no climbing as such, just a delightful mountain trail (can be
steep at times). Imagine returning from your holiday with a certificate
to say you have climbed the highest mountain in Southeast Asia!
For the less adventurous, a visit to the Kinabalu National Park base HQ
area (5,000ft) and its surrounding natural beauty spots is still very much
worth the visit. Poring Hot Springs nearby, rivers and valleys, canopy
walk suspension bridges and a visit
to the Sabah Tea Garden are a must.
Rent a car from KK for the day and
explore the area on your own (from
£25 per vehicle per day), or take one
of our luxury vintage Daimler
limousine picnic excursions from KK.
A chauffeur driven day of splendour,
visiting the Mountain National Park
HQ, Poring Hot Springs and a valley
canopy walk.
A special lunch is
served at the Sabah Tea Plantation
where you can relax and enjoy the
views of the tea terraces blending
into the mountainside. £49 per
person (max 6 people), 9am - 6pm.
